A few weeks ago we heard how negativity is seriously contagious, robs us of our joy and derails our destiny. For the Israelites entering the promised land (Numbers 12-14) the 10 spies that brought back similar information but a negative attitude caused thousands to miss out on their God given inheritance. This one dose of negativity caused the entire nation to abort their promised land. All but two walked right beside their destiny for the rest of their lives and never experienced the land of milk and honey. This example is a scary insight into the destructive power negativity can have in our lives. I wonder whose destiny we have derailed in a moment of negativity or what promises of God we continue to miss out on because of a negative faithless spirit.
Jesus Christ is of course infinitely more powerful than any negativity we can muster. Jesus through His work on the cross gives us the opportunity to become new creations and smash any negativity in our lives. Negativity is a tool of the devil to paralyse our walk with God just as it did for the Israelites. Just like unforgiveness, negativity is a slow working poison that will slowly snuff the life and joy out of anyone (there is a reason that negativity isn’t listed as a fruit of the spirit). The good news is that there is an antidote. If negativity is the thief of happiness (and it is), then gratefulness is the restorer. Practising gratefulness in our lives destroys negativity and replaces it with joy. It is impossible to be thankful and negative at the same time. Jesus gives us the grace and ability to practise gratitude in absolutely any situation. The choice is clear, if we want to neutralise our negativity it’s time to get into gratitude.
