History buffs will recognise this week’s title as a famous statement made by then Prime minister of England Neville Chamberlain just months before the outbreak of World War II. Chamberlain had just returned from a meeting with Adolf Hitler and believed that Hitler would cease in his plans to expand the German empire. Chamberlain had put his faith in a policy loosely termed Appeasement Policy (give them what they want and they will go away). I was reading from 1 Peter 3:10 this week and read the following words ‘If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies. Turn away from evil, do good, search for peace and maintain it’. The whole of Europe discovered that peace wouldn’t come through appeasement. Peace had to worked for and then maintained.
Living at peace is obviously a key ingredient to living a happy life. Those who are truly enjoying life have been able to find peace in their world. The reason so many people don’t experience peace is that they haven’t yet realised that peace needs to be sought and maintained. Peace isn’t always the default setting even for people that love Jesus. All people are different and have different values and opinions. The different view point on something isn’t the problem. It’s how we respond to the difference which defines us. That is why the Apostle Paul in his writings says ‘as much as it is up to you, aim to live at peace with everyone’. It can require work to maintain this peace but if we want to enjoy the life God has for us we need to seek peace out. God’s best for us is to be at peace and His peace is achievable for anyone who is prepared to search for it and maintain it. With the help of Jesus it is possible to experience Peace in our time.
